As the nation prepares to mark its 250th birthday, the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (Frost Science) is seizing the historic moment with a multi-platform programming initiative titled America250: Celebrating American Innovation.
Timed to the nation’s Semiquincentennial, the initiative transforms Frost Science into a civic gathering place where visitors can explore the discoveries, daring experiments, and visionary thinkers that turned American curiosity into global progress.
The programming aligns with the official national America250 commemoration and Miami-Dade County’s local Miami-Dade 250 initiative, positioning Frost Science as South Florida’s anchor institution for science-centered anniversary storytelling, said Dr. Doug Roberts, CEO and president of Frost Science.
The special programing includes:
■Innovators Who Shaped a Nation: Now open, a sweeping poster exhibit across the museum profiles 250 American scientists, engineers, innovators, and changemakers whose work reshaped what is possible. Spanning ocean exploration, space science, aviation, human health, and natural history, the exhibit traces a living thread from the nation’s founding era to the frontiers of modern discovery.
■An Original Frost Planetarium Short: The Frost Planetarium will debut a specially commissioned short weaving together five thematic stories drawn from marine science, paleontology and natural history, astronomy, and aeronautics and flight. Narrated by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, the short celebrates how American innovation has sparked connection across disciplines, across generations, and across the globe.
■Hands-On Programming: Running through July 31, visitors can participate in the America250 Passport Program, answering questions about the featured scientists throughout the poster exhibit and redeeming completed passports for prizes at the Science Store, turning every visit into an interactive lesson. On June 6, Frost Science’s annual World Ocean Day celebration will highlight the American oceanographers, scientists, and engineers who have pushed the boundaries of marine exploration, connecting their legacies to active research happening today.
■2.5 Million Acts of Science: Frost Science is partnering with SciStarter, a nonprofit dedicated to public engagement in scientific research, in a national push to record 2.5 million acts of science in honor of America’s 250th birthday. An Act of Science can be as simple as submitting a wildlife observation, analyzing data online, or attending a citizen science event.
“Science is one of America’s most enduring contributions to the world,” Dr. Roberts said. “As we mark this milestone, we’re celebrating the curiosity and collaboration driving discovery, from ocean to space, and inviting our community to be part of what’s next.”
