PORT ST. LUCIE − A 16-year-old girl who police said was in crisis and jumped off the Southeast Crosstown Parkway bridge into the St. Lucie River on Oct. 30 was rescued, a spokesperson said.
The incident happened about 7:11 p.m. on the bridge just east of Southeast Floresta Drive, said Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, police spokesperson.
“A passerby saw her clinging to a mangrove under the bridge asking for help,” he said.
Mesiti said the teen was in crisis and trying to die by suicide.
He said a citizen with a boat offered assistance and officers got on board.
“We pulled her out of the water and she was already hypothermic, but she was brought to a local hospital where she recovered,” he said.
The incident comes days after another rescue from the river.
A 37-year-old woman reported missing Oct. 27 was found a day later stuck in about 2 feet of water in muck in the St. Lucie River, police stated.
Police on Oct. 28 reported a heavy presence in the area of the 700 block of Northeast Emerson Street “regarding a missing adult who may have wandered into a body of water,” police stated via social media.

Mesiti stated the woman was reported on Oct. 27 as having left her home in the area. The woman, Mesiti said, has a history of doing so.
She last was seen by her family about 5:30 p.m. Oct. 24, Mesiti said.
Mesiti said she appeared to be experiencing some sort of crisis when she left her home.
