A man arrested after being accused of an armed home invasion in Miami Gardens that ended with him being shot was charged with attempted murder, records showed.
Ezekiel Leatherwood, 18, was charged with attempted felony murder and four counts of robbery/home invasion with a firearm.
During his court appearance on Tuesday, a judge denied Leatherwood’s bond.
According to Miami Gardens Police, on Monday, officers arrived at a home in the 3000 block of 204th Street after receiving reports of a disturbance and that shots were fired.
An arrest report said that when officers arrived at the home, they found a man lying in the front, suffering from a gunshot wound.
The man, identified as Leatherwood, was then airlifted to Aventura Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the report said.
During their investigation, the report said, one of the residents of the home was inside her car out in the front when four people in masks and armed with guns approached her, and ordered her to get out of her car. They also demanded money.
The masked subjects then forced her to let them inside the home, and once inside, they went to another victim’s bedroom and kicked the door, the report said.
In the bedroom, the victim, the report said, was armed after hearing his girlfriend screaming, and then fired a shot when the door was breached.
Leatherwood, who was armed with an AR-15 style rifle, was struck in the arm, and the other suspects fled the scene, the report said.
The victim reported that he fired additional rounds at the suspect’s vehicle as it left the area.
It was determined that the victim acted in self-defense during the incident.
The search for the other suspects remains active.
