The driver was seriously injured. Criminal charges are pending.
TAMPA, Fla. — One person is dead after a wrong-way driver caused a multi-vehicle crash on I-275 in Tampa Friday.
The incident began around 9 p.m. when the driver of a Chevy Silverado was traveling north in the southbound lanes of East Fowler Avenue near the I-275 on-ramp.
According to the Tampa Police Department, the driver hit two vehicles and continued on in the wrong direction.
Less than 15 minutes later, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) responded to a second hit-and-run involving the same vehicle on the interstate just south of Fowler Avenue. Again, the driver continued on in the wrong direction.
Around 9:15 p.m., FHP says the driver reached the area of Busch Boulevard and collided with a Toyota Corolla.
Both vehicles overturned and the Chevy caught fire.
As the Toyota overturned it collided with a third vehicle, which then rotated and collided with a fourth vehicle.
The driver of the Corolla, a 24-year-old Tampa man, suffered fatal injuries at the scene.
The wrong-way driver, a 21-year-old Tampa man, was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital.
No other injuries were reported and criminal charges are pending.
