A homeowner said he heard popping sounds and went to investigate, finding the rear bedroom of his North Diamond Street house on fire.

Jacksonville and South Jacksonville firefighters were called to the house at 854 N. Diamond St. about 1:15 p.m. Sunday.

Jacksonville Fire Department Capt. Dan Klendworth said the resident tried to put out the fire before calling the fire department and getting out of the house.

“He tried to put water on it, but called us after a few minutes,” Klendworth said.

The fire did spread to other rooms of the house, but Klendworth said firefighters were able to save the overall structure.

The homeowner was working with American Red Cross for assistance.

The cause of the fire is not known but is not considered suspicious, according to a fire department report.
