Miami Autism Dad Victor Antunez interviews Denise C. Elizondo, Director of Catching Up Therapy. The conversation examines why speech, occupational therapy, behavioral therapy, and feeding fall apart when they’re treated as separate services, and what changes when one team handles them under one roof. Denise breaks down the behaviors schools call “bad” that are really communication signals a child doesn’t have the words for yet, the difference between a child who can speak and a child who can communicate, and why feeding groups work in ways individual sessions don’t. The conversation goes further than therapy. Denise hires adults with IDD at her clinic through partnerships with Best Buddies and the WOW Center, sits on the executive board of Casa Familia’s Young Professionals Board on affordable housing for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and tells parents what they should be paying attention to about their child’s future employment long before high school ends.
