Avianca, the national airline of Colombia, is adding more service in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to coincide with the World Cup as the long-awaited soccer tournament approaches its initial matches this month, including in the host city of Miami.
The airline announced Monday it will tack on 1,800 extra seats to routes connecting Bogotá with Miami, Mexico City and Dallas, as well as Quito, Ecuador, with New York.
The Colombian team is scheduled to make an appearance on June 27 versus Portugal at the Hard Rock Stadium in northern Miami-Dade County.
Avianca previously announced it would operate 3,000 flights with approximately 600,000 seats to and from the tournament’s host cities.
Avianca offers more than 80 destinations in 25 countries through 155 routes. The airline is offering nonstop service to 10 of the tournament’s 16 host cities: Miami, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Dallas, and Houston; Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico; and Toronto, Canada.
Although Avianca points to Miami International Airport as its prime World Cup landing spot for South Florida, the airline also serves Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. A number of Broward County hotels are located within shorter distances from the World Cup venue than hotels located south of the Miami-Dade County line.
The airline is now selling tickets for daily nonstop flights between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International and Barranquilla and Cali. Those new services start July 15.
Seats may be purchased through avianca.com, the airline’s mobile app, physical points of sale and travel agencies.
