TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A new nonprofit organization is helping create pathways into film and television for the next generation of storytellers.
HUE Avenue is founded by St. Petersburg native Tamia Iman Kennedy. It builds on the community impact of Black On The Scene and is dedicated to educating and empowering Black, Brown, and underrepresented communities through film and television.
As a writer, producer, actress, and advocate, Kennedy understands the importance of representation on screen. Through HUE Avenue, she aims to provide meaningful opportunities for young people and emerging creatives to explore careers in media, develop storytelling skills, and see themselves reflected in the stories being told.
One of the organization’s signature programs is the HUE Avenue Film Club, a four-week educational experience that teaches high school students how to critically analyze film through the lens of Black Cinema. This year’s theme “Reclaiming the Narrative,” explores how Black stories have shaped and redefined genre filmmaking.
Today on Rooted in Progress, Kennedy joins us to details the program and how participants gain valuable insight into the creative process and career opportunities in entertainment.
