TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The ‘340 fire’ in Wakulla County is at 30% containment as some residents are back home after briefly evacuating yesterday because of the wildfire.
A few residents in the Apalachicola National Forest were evacuated as a precaution on Thursday when the fire jumped a road. As of Friday afternoon, the fire is up to 22,000 acres with 30% containment.
A forest service spokesperson said dry conditions this week have made it harder to get a better grip on the fire.

U.S. Forest Service Public Information Officer (PIO) Melanie Banton said rain can help.
“The little bit of rain we’ve gotten as a testament by the 340 fire is that it can be completely soaked and you can have puddles, but if you don’t have continuous rain to meet that drought threshold, it’s going to dry out with the next bout of sun and wind in low relative humidities,” the PIO said.
Banton states that people around Sopchoppy will continue to see smoke for a while and they don’t have an estimate on when the fire will be completely out.
