Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has directed the county to move forward with eminent domain proceedings to acquire a fuel facility property at PortMiami after negotiations with the property owner broke down.
The Board of County Commissioners authorized the county to negotiate for the property in September 2025, with eminent domain as a fallback if talks failed. After months of negotiations, the two sides could not agree on terms. Mayor Levine Cava rejected the final proposal, citing the price as too high, and has directed Deputy Mayor Roy Coley and the County Attorney’s Office to begin legal action.
The mayor noted that while the proposed deal would have allowed the county to own the facility and structured the acquisition to cover its own costs over time without direct taxpayer spending, the overall price was not acceptable.
County officials said they remain committed to ensuring PortMiami maintains a reliable fuel supply to support its operations and the jobs tied to the port.
County commissioners will receive confidential briefings on the matter while certain non-disclosure provisions remain in place.
