Students dressed in Halloween costumes answered trivia questions during the Campus Activities Board’s “Are You Smarter Than a Monster?” event Wednesday night at the Student Union.

The event was a spin on the game show and trivia format “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” There were four categories of questions: science, pop culture, movies/TV and history. Each category was represented by a volunteer dressed as a character, such as Frankenstein’s monster or a zombie.

Lautaro Heredia, sophomore hospitality management major, took on the role of Frankenstein’s monster for the science category. Between handing out candy like Skittles and Snickers, Heredia said he enjoyed watching students get excited when they got a question right.

“I was kind of there to just sit pretty and make sure the answers were correct for the show,” Heredia said.

Some students also came dressed in their own costumes, such as a knight and the bride of Frankenstein.

Keith Williams, sophomore computer engineering major, said he came for a chance to meet new people.

“I wanted to meet people and see what their costumes would look like,” Williams said.

Songs such as “Calling All the Monsters” by China Anne McClain and “Thriller” by Michael Jackson played in the background to help incorporate the Halloween theme. The event was meant to boost Halloween spirit on campus, organizers said.

“I think it can get people hyped and excited and see ideas for what they can do for their costumes,” Heredia said.

Antonio Mitchell, comedy director for CAB, helped put the spin-off idea together and hosted the event.

“We thought Halloween trivia would be fun, especially if we were able to incorporate monsters into it,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said events like this are great to have on campus, and the music, free candy and interactive activities are great for UCF students to enjoy.

“Having these types of resources, activities available and accessible for our students can definitely bring the Halloween spirit up in our crowd,” Mitchell said.
