Air travel history was made in Macon-Bibb on Monday, June 9, when Contour Airways flew the first of four regularly scheduled weekly flights to Fort Lauderdale from Middle Georgia Regional Airport.
Aviation director Doug Faour said with the new round-trip flight to Fort Lauderdale, Macon is the only airport in Georgia, outside of Atlanta, that flies to two of the top 5 air markets in the country, South Florida and metropolitan Washington, D.C.
The flight on Monday to Baltimore also marked the resumption of that destination after having flown into Dulles for the past year. The new, non-stop 1-hour and 45-minute flight to Fort Lauderdale is on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday. Depending on availability on the 30-seat plane, round-trip prices to South Florida can range between $200 to $300. Faour said Contour has an agreement with JetBlue where travelers can schedule a connecting flight to several destinations in the Caribbean. The Middle Georgia Regional Airport is undergoing a major transformation with an expanded runway and the construction of a new HighNote Aviation Terminal in the shape of a guitar, in recognition of Macon’s rich musical heritage.
