TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tallahassee’s Urban League is joining calls for fewer pop-up parties, hoping to prevent gun violence.
Earlier this week, Tallahassee Police blamed those parties for several recent shootings.
Urban League leaders describe them as late-night outings where teenagers and young adults congregate after meeting at local bars and clubs.

They say these pop-up parties can turn violent because of lingering arguments.
TPD Dep. Chief Maurice Holmes joined the Urban League at Thursday’s press conference.
“Leaders, ministers, teachers, parents, in this community, this is a clarion call. This is a clarion call for you all to step up. Stepping up in our community. Stepping out and having good conversations, good conversations with our not-so-young, and good conversations with our seasoned members,” Holmes said.
The Urban League is hosting an ‘Empowerment Week’ next week, with stopping gun violence as one of its main goals.
