Two Orlando candidates were fighting during early voting at the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office, and Regina Hill apologized for the conduct.

As if the embarrassment for Orlando’s District 5 could not get worse, suspended former Orlando Commissioner Regina Hill posted video on Facebook of the confrontation with current Commissioner Shan Rose, which shows over 72,000 views. Hill, Rose, and Lawanna Gelzer are running for District 5 Commissioner, and Gelzer’s campaign said she is the clear choice as an alternative to the other two fighting candidates.

Regina Hill is running to get back into office as she faces multiple felony charges and an upcoming trial after Election Day. Shan Rose has been trying to focus on her accomplishments and vision for District 5, but Hill has been politically attacking her and putting the pressure on her since the start of the campaign. Gelzer got in the race late to offer the community an alternative. This latest candidate fight during early voting doesn’t help either Hill or Rose right before Election Day on November 4th.

Hill admitted she has never experienced “such hateful and divisive rhetoric in a District 5 campaign.” She asked for understanding and forgiveness. “We are better than this,” Hill insisted in her apology. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer must be disappointed and embarrassed by this representation of the City Beautiful.

After posting the video herself, Regina Hill later issued a “Statement of Apology and Call for Unity.” Here is what Regina Hill posted as an apology for the incident:

I want to sincerely apologize for my emotional response yesterday. As a mother who has endured the heartbreaking loss of both my daughter and my mother, hearing their names spoken in a disparaging and disrespectful manner caused me deep pain in a moment of vulnerability. My reaction came from a place of human emotion—not malice—and for that, I am truly sorry.

Throughout my three campaign cycles, I have always believed in the dignity of public service and the responsibility we have as leaders to elevate our community. Never before have I experienced such hateful and divisive rhetoric in a District 5 campaign as this one. This is not who we are as a people, and it is not what our community deserves.

We are better than this. I stand before you not only as a public servant, but as a human being asking for understanding, forgiveness, and a renewed commitment to civility. Let us move forward in unity, with respect for one another, and focus on the future we are building together.

Again, I humbly ask that you accept my apology.
