TRADITION, Fla. (CBS12) — It’s official. Residents in Tradition can now carry firearms in common areas after an HOA policy was challenged by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier.

In a June 10 letter posted on the attorney general’s X account, the Tradition Community Association said, “Following the receipt of your correspondence, the association’s board of directors further reviewed the matter and has voted to rescind the rule regarding carry of weapons in common areas. Accordingly, the association will not enforce the rule.”

Following the move, Uthmeier posted on X that the Tradition Community Association did the right thing and repealed what he called “its blanket firearms ban.”

“Those who choose to conceal carry for lawful, defensive purposes are protected by Florida law, and we will use this office to defend those protections,” Uthmeier posted on X.

Last week, Uthmeier stated that the Tradition Community Association would no longer enforce what he called its “unlawful” firearm ban.

The decision comes after some residents in a Tradition neighborhood received letters from the association stating that the carry of firearms — openly or concealed — was banned in common areas.

Following the policy change, the Port St. Lucie Police Department said it would not enforce the rule.
