ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A woman died after a medical emergency while in custody of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.
Officials said at around 2:30 p.m. that day, deputies conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of West 3rd Street and Duval Street.
The sheriff’s Office said during the stop, deputies had probable cause to search the car of Kristen Williams, 39, and found suspected narcotics. She was arrested during the investigation and placed in the back of a patrol car.
While in the back of the car, the sheriff’s office said Williams began experiencing a “medical emergency and exhibited signs consistent with an overdose.”
Deputies and St. Johns County Fire Rescue personnel immediately initiated life-saving measures on scene. She was then taken to a hospital where she died.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
