FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — A teenage boy who was critically injured while riding his bicycle in a shooting died from his injuries on Monday.

The Fort Pierce Police Department said the 16-year-old died after spending several days in the intensive care unit.

CBS12 previously reported that on the night of Thursday, June 11, detectives with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office were traveling east on Avenue N when they heard multiple gunshots. When they approached North 23rd Street, detectives said they saw three boys running in different directions.

While officers and deputies pursued the suspects, they found the 16-year-old lying on a sidewalk on top of a bicycle with a 9mm pistol and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. After detectives performed life-saving measures, he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Police, deputies, K-9 teams and the sheriff’s aviation unit quickly flooded the area and set up a perimeter.

Investigators said all three suspects were found within a short time. One was tracked down by a K-9, and another was found hiding inside a recycling bin. Officers also recovered a gun they believe is connected to the case.

A 16-year-old was arrested in connection with the shooting and was booked on charges of attempted homicide, tampering with evidence and unlawful carrying of a firearm by a person under 18.

The police department said even though officers have made an arrest, the investigation is still active and ongoing.
