Miami Music Project’s Little Haiti Debut Orchestra performs at Pérez Art Museum Miami during Haitian Heritage Month concert.
Miami Music Project celebrated Haitian Heritage Month through a special performance by its Little Haiti Debut Orchestra during “Lakay PAMM: Living Beyond Borders” on May 8 at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).
Presented in collaboration with Route 1804 Foundation and PAMM, the event transformed the museum’s waterfront terrace into a vibrant celebration of Haitian culture, music, and storytelling, honoring the richness and enduring legacy of the global Haitian diaspora.
“Music has always been one of the ways Haiti tells its story to the world,” said Sandy Dorsainvil, Route 1804 Foundation executive director. “Having the Miami Music Project join us at PAMM is a beautiful reminder that our culture, our children, and our creativity continue to thrive across generations and beyond borders.”

“Just a few miles from their neighborhood, Miami Music Project students at Toussaint Louverture Elementary (Little Haiti Chapter) stood proudly at PAMM, with their hearts full of culture and pride,” said Sasha Leon, community involvement specialist and parent outreach liaison at Toussaint L’Ouverture Elementary. “In that unforgettable moment, they didn’t just represent their heritage; they saw how far their dreams could reach.”
Miami Music Project students performed for members and friends of the Haitian community at the event, presenting a repertoire that honored Haiti’s cultural identity and musical traditions. The Little Haiti Debut Orchestra performed La Dessalinienne, the national anthem of Haiti, alongside the beloved Haitian folk song Choucune (Yellow Bird). Students also participated in the evening’s cultural programming, enjoying Haitian cuisine and a guided tour of PAMM’s current exhibition, “Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture.”
“Lakay PAMM: Living Beyond Borders” featured performances by DJ Gardy, ZB Keys, NSL Dance Ensemble, and Rara Lakay, as well as interactive cultural experiences and storytelling initiatives designed to celebrate Haitian creativity and resilience. Guests also explored “coming forth by day,” the first Miami solo museum exhibition by Miami-born Haitian artist Woody De Othello.
Miami Music Project’s Little Haiti Chapter serves students and families through free after-school music education rooted in community engagement, mentorship, and artistic excellence. Through performances like this, the organization continues its mission to use music as an instrument for social transformation while uplifting the diverse cultural voices that shape Miami.
