MIAMI, Okla. — Several agencies are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place near Miami.
According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), The Joplin Police Department (Missouri) alerted the Quapaw Nation marshals Service of a stolen car out of Joplin. Offices found the car at the Downstream Casino and Resort just after 9 a.m.
As officers were attempting to approach the car, the driver sped away which led to a pursuit.
Authorities said the male driver “brandished a forearm” during the pursuit. He drove the wrong direction in the westbound lanes of Interstate 44 in Miami.
Officers blocked traffic and the driver stopped the car. He and his passenger, an adult woman, exited the car and the driver once again brandished a gun.
OSBI said law enforcement gave the suspect commands to which he did not comply resulting in a shooting that left both the driver and his passenger deceased.
OSBI said they were both pronounced dead on scene and no other injuries were reported.
