Tampa is about to get its first Replay Sports Cards location, and honestly, the story behind it is exactly the kind of thing you’d pitch as a heartwarming movie premise before immediately dismissing it as too on-the-nose.

Matt Thomas spent years as a mechanical engineer, bouncing between aviation, nuclear energy, oil and gas, and medical device manufacturing. That’s a resume that practically screams, “I’ve seen things that would make most people weep softly into their hard hats.” But despite the impressive career trajectory, Thomas wanted something more. Something his. Something involving, as it turns out, a lot of cardboard with athletes on it.

Replay Sports Cards, America’s first national franchise dedicated exclusively to the sports card hobby, announced earlier this month that it’s signed Thomas as a franchise partner to bring a new location to Tampa. The shop’s still in development, with a timeline to be announced, but it’s coming.

Here’s where it gets charming. Thomas wasn’t searching for a generic franchise to park some money in. He started selling off old trading cards from his childhood, and it hit him the same way it hits everyone: one minute you’re offloading a 1994 Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card, and the next minute you’re three hours deep into a price guide at 11 pm and your wife is asking whether you’ve eaten dinner. The hobby grabbed him. He fell back in love with it, and then decided to turn that love into a business.

His vision for the Tampa location centers on community. Trade nights. Family events. A place where longtime collectors can geek out alongside parents introducing their kids to the hobby for the first time. Thomas has talked about bonding with his own son over cards, and it’s clear that’s the emotional engine behind the whole project. A card shop, but make it a destination. Make it a place where people slow down.

Replay’s model fits that vision well. The franchise, which already has locations across the Southeast (including one in Boca Raton), combines modern retail infrastructure with an old-school emphasis on relationships. You can buy, sell, trade, and get cards graded, all in an environment that’s supposed to feel like a neighborhood shop rather than a transaction factory.

No opening date has been set yet, but when it lands, Tampa’s going to have its new gathering spot for collectors of all ages.
