PORT ST. LUCIE — Immortalized on screen by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, the Tony Award-winning play, “The Miracle Worker,” opens Nov. 7 at Treasure Coast Theatre.

The three-act play tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, Helen Keller, who lost her sight and hearing at the age of 19 months.

Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, young Keller is violent and misunderstood, treated by her family as subhuman. Only Sullivan sees a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from Keller’s dark, tortured silence.

Universal sorrows, family bonds, and the strength of the human spirit are explored in the amazing true story of two remarkable women.

Actors Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke also starred in the live Broadway version, which premiered in New York City in October 1959. The play won five Tony awards, including best play.

Treasure Coast Theatre’s staging of the play stars Jillian Kober as Annie Sullivan and Eliana DeJesus and Ruby Fuchs sharing the challenging role of Helen Keller. Rounding out the cast are Jamie Josephs, Michael Beecher, Brandon Snyders and Teffanie Hoover as rest of the Keller family. Other cast members include Suni Mayo-Simpson; Adam Robinson-Frometa; Cheyanne Hoover; and Rick Decker.

The production is directed by Heidi Condon, a veteran of community theater throughout the Treasure Coast.

“The Miracle Worker” runs weekends, from Nov. 7-23.   Performances are held at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Tickets are $26 and may be purchased online at treasurecoasttheatre.com or by phone at (772) 418-2439. Discounts are available for groups, students and season tickets.
