The debate over representation in Jacksonville continues.
While a controversial state bill is being considered 120 miles away, the Jacksonville City Council met in a special emergency meeting tonight to discuss House Bill 1038 and the possibility of redistricting.
After nearly two hours of discussion, without public comment, council members voted 4-3 to move forward with discussing the redrawing of district lines.
Much of the meeting focused on House Bill 1038, which is currently displaced in the North Carolina General Assembly.
The bill would change how Jacksonville residents are represented by shifting the city to an all at-large election system.
Several council members argued that if the concern is with district boundaries, then the city should address those boundaries rather than overhaul the entire representation system.
As an alternative, members proposed redistricting. The meeting concluded with a 4-3 vote to continue discussions on redrawing district lines.
