FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — The City of Fort Pierce announced the Florida Highwaymen Museum has been selected as a featured stop on the America 250 Road Trip.

The U.S. Department of Transportation spearheaded the nationwide initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

City leaders say the designation recognizes the legacy of the Original Florida Highwaymen while highlighting Fort Pierce as a destination where history, culture, and art come together.

The Florida Highwaymen Museum is the only museum in the nation dedicated to all 26 Original Florida Highwaymen artists. It is also the only place where visitors can view paintings from each of the original artists in a single location.

The museum tells the story of the self-taught Black artists who overcame racial barriers during the Jim Crow era by creating and selling their vibrant Florida landscape paintings door-to-door, leaving behind a lasting artistic and cultural legacy.

Visitors can also explore the nearby Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail, allowing them to experience two of Florida’s most celebrated cultural attractions in one trip.

The Florida Highwaymen Museum is located at 1234 Avenue D in Fort Pierce.

City officials encourage residents and visitors alike to stop by and discover why Fort Pierce continues to be recognized as a place where history, art, and culture inspire future generations.
