FORT PIERCE — A diver was found deceased after a search amid a mayday call on June 26 in Fort Pierce.
On Friday, June 26, at 11:30 a.m., the U.S Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce received a mayday call regarding a missing diver.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission deployed four vessels in a search effort.
A group of civilian divers, who were friends of the diver, were notified of the emergency and departed the Fort Pierce Inlet at approximately 1 p.m. to aid in the search, according to SLCSO.
Responding units made contact with the vessel approximately six to seven miles north/northwest of the Fort Pierce Inlet, nearly due west of Avalon State Park, according to SLCSO.
At 4:10 p.m., the group of civilian divers entered the water and found the missing diver at the bottom of the ocean, approximately 55 feet below the surface.
The diver was pronounced deceased.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is being conducted by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office criminal investigations division.
The investigation remains ongoing.
