MIAMI — Somewhat lost in the personnel machinations of what might come next for the Miami Heat is what also is coming next.

To this point, Part B of the Giannis Antetokounmpo acquisition largely has gone overlooked, as in Bobby Portis, the plus-one in the agreement with the Milwaukee Bucks that will not become official until the July 6 opening of the NBA’s 2026-27 cap calendar.

For a Heat team that sent out four players in the Antetokounmpo deal as well as the draft rights to No. 13 pick Nate Ament, the forward out of Tennessee, Portis likely will stand as far more than a throw-in.

As Pat Riley, Andy Elisburg and the Heat front office rebuild the Heat’s roster, Portis stands as a meaningful component of the deal in myriad ways. Foremost, there is the matter of rounding out a power rotation that lost 7-footer Kel’el Ware in the trade. There also is the reality that by taking Portis’ $14.5 million salary into the trade exception created last July in the Duncan Robinson deal, the Heat, by rule, therefore become hard-capped at the first luxury-tax apron.

So what are the Heat getting in Portis, 31, who finished third in 2023 voting for NBA Sixth Man of the Year and competed in last season’s 3-point contest at All-Star Weekend?

According to a long-time NBA scout contacted by the South Florida Sun Sentinel in the wake of the trade, a plug-and-play contributor.

“Legitimate toughness with some leadership,” the scout said, requesting anonymity because his work for his team does not allow him to comment on a player from another team. “He can play four and five, has become an excellent 3-point shooter. Not much handle or playmaking, a below-average defender who doesn’t move well laterally. A very good defensive rebounder, but not a good athlete.

“Mostly has been a bench guy throughout his career and that’s his best role, playing 22-26 minutes a night. All in all, a solid rotation piece on a playoff-level team.”

With Ware dealt, with Nikola Jovic coming off an uneven 2025-26 season, and with the Heat going small both in the NBA draft and then with those added after the draft, a definitive role should be there for the No. 22 pick in the 2022 draft by the Chicago Bulls.

As for the contract, in addition to the $14.5 million due for the coming season, Portis holds a $15.6 million player option for 2027-28, basically mid-level-exception money.

“A good deal,” the scout said. “Actually right on the mark.”

As the Heat’s current roster stands, Jovic would stand as the fourth component in the power rotation, although he also could be part of a bigger front line and cast at small forward, because of his ballhandling and playmaking, which also is his preferred role.

There already is history between the Heat and Portis, who had words with the Heat bench during the teams’ 2023 playoff series won by the Heat. That led to a technical foul on then-Heat captain Udonis Haslem, who was not in the game at the time.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra at the time downplayed the confrontation, with the Heat routinely making peace after acquiring former Heat instigators.

Earlier this month, in acknowledging Antetokounmpo possibly moving on from the Bucks, Portis recognized the possibility that he could be included in a potential deal with his 2021 Milwaukee championship teammate.

“Me and Giannis are close friends, we talk every single week,” Portis said on FanDuel TV’s Run it Back. “He’s been in trade rumors for six years. At the end of the day, you just have to control what you can control. You wake up every day and you try to get better.’

Of fitting in elsewhere on a team that previously was viewed as a rival, Portis said, “I play with heart, I play with passion. When I’m on your team, you love me. When I’m the enemy, you hate me.”

With the Antetokounmpo trade not formally completed, it also could be expanded with Portis moved on to another team.

While the Heat cannot comment for another week, there immediately was a vote of confidence for the Portis portion of the Antetokounmpo deal.

“Don’t sleep on how important the Heat getting Bobby Portis is,” NBA legend Magic Johnson posted on social media. “Bobby’s ability to shoot from the 3-point line and his toughness, he will be a major part of the Heat success!”
