FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — An off-duty Martin County Fire Rescue lieutenant stepped into recovery efforts Friday and helped locate and recover a missing diver found dead off Fort Pierce, officials said.

Martin County Fire Rescue said Lt. Daniel DeGrazia was called in around 1:30 p.m. June 26 to assist with the operation after a diver was reported missing in waters off St. Lucie County.

Officials emphasized that DeGrazia was off duty at the time and chose to respond and assist with the recovery efforts on his own.

At about 4:15 p.m., DeGrazia recovered the body of the diver, who had drowned, according to fire rescue officials.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office is the lead agency on the investigation. Deputies said the U.S. Coast Guard received a mayday call around 11:30 a.m. reporting a missing diver, prompting a multi-agency search response.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, and civilian boaters all assisted in the search effort. Civilian divers later located the victim about six miles offshore in roughly 55 feet of water, officials said.

The diver was recovered and pronounced dead. The body was taken to Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce, where the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is handling the case.
