PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A 78-year-old woman from Port. St. Lucie was killed Sunday morning after a parked SUV rolled backward in a residential driveway.
According to troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol, a Lincoln MKX was parked in a driveway in the 100 block of SE El Sito Court while the victim was standing outside of a different vehicle between the open driver’s door and the left side of the SUV. At the same time, her 59-year-old son sat in the front passenger seat.
Troopers say that just before 11 a.m., the son started the vehicle by reaching over the center console to press the brake pedal with his left hand and pushing the start button with his right hand.

For reasons that are still under investigation, officials say the SUV began rolling backward, causing the open driver’s door to strike the woman and knock her to the ground.
