ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The St. Petersburg Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred Sunday morning on Pershing Street Northeast that resulted in the death of one person.

What we know:

SPPD said the shooting occurred at 11:20 a.m. while responding to a call of an attempted suicide.

The officer was not hurt, but a man who was shot was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

What we don’t know:

PCSO had not released the name of the shooting officer, due to a new law starting on Wednesday, July 1st that prohibits law enforcement from releasing an officer’s name in the first 72 hours of a shooting investigation. 

This is still an ongoing investigation. Updates will be released as they become available.
