According to Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, Miami has been shopping Nikola Jovic, who is entering the first season of a four-year, $62 million contract, in an effort to clear salary and re-sign Powell.
“League sources say the Heat have shopped Nikola Jovic in an attempt to cut salary to open flexibility for Powell,” O’Connor reported.
However, moving Jovic may not be easy.
“Jovic is entering the first year of a four-year, $62 million contract that already looks like an albatross by role-player standards given his lack of development at 23 years old. Miami would have to attach draft capital to Jovic’s contract to dump him, but the front office only has a 2029 first-round pick and swap rights in 2028 and 2032 to dangle,” O’Connor added.
Heat searching for veteran backcourt help
Acquiring Antetokounmpo was the biggest move of the offseason, but it also left Miami with little room to spend in free agency.
That means the Heat are expected to focus on experienced players who can fill specific roles rather than pursue another marquee signing.
Tim Hardaway Jr. stands out as a proven scorer and perimeter shooter. Last season, he appeared in 80 games, averaging 13.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting 44.7 percent from the field.
His ability to space the floor could make him a strong fit alongside Antetokounmpo, whose presence often creates open looks for shooters.
Mike Conley Jr. offers a different skill set.
In 54 games this season, Conley averaged 4.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists while shooting 33.5 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from three-point range.
