FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — A 63-year-old Fort Pierce man was identified on Monday morning as the diver found dead offshore after a search sparked by a Mayday call near the Fort Pierce Inlet.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said Greer Boyd’s body was recovered Friday afternoon, offering new details about how the tragedy unfolded in waters off St. Lucie County.

According to investigators, the incident began around 11:30 a.m. on June 26, when the U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call reporting a missing diver. Multiple agencies, including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the SLCSO marine unit, launched a coordinated response alongside civilian boaters and aerial units.

Authorities say Boyd had been fishing with friends earlier in the day when their boat’s trolling motor fell overboard. The group marked the location, returned to shore to retrieve diving gear, then headed back out to try to recover it.

Boyd entered the water alone to search for the motor and later resurfaced about 40 yards from the vessel. When others reached the area, they found only his buoyancy compensator and air tank floating in the water.

At around 4:10 p.m., a civilian diver went into the water and located Boyd on the ocean floor at a depth of about 55 feet, according to SLCSO. He was brought to the surface and later pronounced dead.

Boyd was transported to Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce, where the sheriff’s office criminal investigations division took over the case. An autopsy was scheduled as of the latest update from the sheriff’s office on June 29.

The sheriff’s office described the incident as a “tragic loss” and extended condolences to Boyd’s family, while also thanking the civilian diver and boaters who helped with the recovery.

Earlier coverage reported that an off-duty Martin County firefighter, Lt. Daniel DeGrazia, assisted in the effort after the diver was reported missing. Investigators have not indicated any signs of foul play, and the investigation remains ongoing.
