MIAMI, Okla. – A Commerce man who was fatally shot by a Miami policeman had illegal drugs in his system as he rushed toward law enforcement with a large metal spike, according to an autopsy report released on Monday.
Jason Wilkins, 49, was ordered to drop his weapon by Miami police several times prior to the Dec. 27, 2024, shooting. The fatal shooting happened before 4 p.m., near C Street Southeast and First Avenue Southeast.
The nine-page autopsy showed Wilkins’s cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was listed as homicide.
The autopsy report showed Wilkins tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.
Six gunshot wounds were reported in the autopsy; those included the left flank, neck and chest, pelvis, and right thigh, and one shell grazed Wilkins’ ear, the autopsy report states.
Police received two separate 911 calls of an armed male subject under the influence attempting to break into an apartment.
Federal prosecutors cleared the Miami police officer of any wrongdoing in February. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI had federal jurisdiction in the case because the officer is an Indian and the shooting occurred within Indian Country in the Northern District of Oklahoma.
