The Cape Coral Rowing Club was robbed in the early hours of June 18 at the third of the Seven Islands property in northwest Cape Coral.
In security footage released by the Cape Coral Police Department June 23 on Facebook, several individuals enter the island by boat and immediately spray paint over the area’s security camera.
The individuals broke into a trailer and storage shed owned by the club, damaging two locks, according to the post. Multiple boat batteries, safety equipment and a boat key were stolen.
The department’s property crimes detectives are investigating the burglary, the post said.
“Our cameras did catch the boat and its captain before the paint was sprayed,” Saundra Weston, the president of the Cape Coral Rowing Club, said in a Facebook post on June 18. The motion-detecting dock light was also spray painted, she said.
Weston confirmed the club hasn’t received any updates about the case. She provided officers and the News-Press additional security footage from June 1 that she believes may show the thieves scoping out the property.
The burglary came at a time of uncertainty for the club, as the city council has yet to decide on a permanent location for the rowers after denying them use of Tropicana Park.
The Cape Coral Police Department is asking anyone with information related to the burglary to call 239-574-3223 with case #26011129 or submit an anonymous tip through Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.
