In Apopka, Florida, that kind of childhood observation turned into something far more serious than a funny dinner-table story. A 6-year-old girl reportedly became the calmest person on the shoulder of State Road 414 on Tuesday evening, waving her arms at passing cars because the adult behind the wheel of her family’s SUV couldn’t respond anymore.
According to the Apopka Police Department, a passerby stopped after spotting the girl and learned she was trying to get help for her mother, who was inside the vehicle and appeared to be unconscious. Dispatch records described the woman as having vomited on herself, which is about as clear a signal as it gets that something had gone very wrong before anyone even pulled over.
Officers arrived to find 33-year-old Joelle Service in a confused and disoriented state, unable to give a clear account of what had happened. There was also visible damage to both passenger-side doors of the SUV, damage Service reportedly couldn’t explain. That’s the kind of detail that tends to raise eyebrows among anyone who’s spent time around cars, since fresh bodywork damage rarely appears out of nowhere.
Police said Service’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot and her speech was slurred. Fire department personnel on scene noted she admitted to drinking throughout the day and believed she was fine to drive home. That belief, as it so often does, turned out to be badly mistaken.
What the Child Told Police
The most striking part of this report comes from the girl herself. She told officers it was her mother’s birthday, and the two had spent the day at Wolf Branch Brewing in Mount Dora. She said her mother had several glasses of wine there, and that the drive home quickly turned frightening, with the SUV swerving and striking objects along the way.
Eventually, feeling ill, Service pulled over on the shoulder of SR-414, where the situation continued to unravel.

Service now faces charges of DUI with a child in the vehicle and child neglect without great bodily harm.
