Samantha Koenig was minding her business at a beach in Florida when she noticed something. The man sitting near her — who appeared to be on vacation with his partner — kept scooting his chair back. So she looked over at his phone. What she saw ended up on TikTok, racking up 2.3 million views.
In her now-viral video, set to a reggae track with text overlays narrating the scene, Koenig (@samanthakoenig6) documents the man scrolling through photos of other women…while his partner sits right next to him, apparently unaware. The caption: “Maybe she’s a sister?”
Koenig noted that she “didn’t like how he kept scooting his chair back” — presumably to angle his screen away from his partner. This move ended up angling it toward a stranger with a phone and 4,800 TikTok followers.
Think about what this man was up against. He was in the shade. He had a straw hat on. And he had his brightness turned down low. And he still got caught by a bystander, filmed, and put on blast to the masses.
This could explain why the privacy screen market is booming.
Is it okay to record a stranger’s phone?
Whether it’s acceptable to record strangers has become a contentious debate. In this case, however, the response was swift and unanimous: the man was in the wrong.
“Why is it so hard to be loyal?” wrote defaye23. “She probably planned this whole vacation too,” added simply_katelyn._
Moldycrust wrote, “There’s a whole ocean in front of him and that’s what he wants to look at.”
Several people thought the woman deserved to know.
Xottxoxo cut straight to the point: “Go tell her.” glam_jan sent a message to the universe: “May this love NEVER find me.”
Queenaustyne had a specific request, writing, “If my boyfriend ever does that, please just hold my hand when you show me the video.” Nicoleschock8 suggested she would’ve gotten involved.
She wrote, “My toxic trait is I would’ve called him out right then and there.”
Koenig did not respond to a request for comment.
