Officials say fire in NW Florida believed to be fireworks related

  • July 5, 2026

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WALA) – Walton County Fire Rescue, Florida posted on its Facebook page, a structure fire in Freeport is believed to have been caused by improperly disposed fireworks.

Here is the post from Saturday night:

STRUCTURE FIRE IN FREEPORT BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY IMPROPERLY DISPOSED FIREWORKS

A 4th of July celebration took a dangerous turn tonight when used fireworks are believed to have sparked a fire that destroyed a detached garage and spread to a nearby home.

At 9:12 p.m. on July 4, 2026, Walton County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a residence on County Highway 83A East in Freeport after a 9-1-1 caller reported a structure fire.

When crews arrived, they found the detached garage fully involved, with flames already extending into the home. Firefighters immediately went to work, attacking the fire from multiple sides to keep it from spreading any farther. Eglin Air Force Base Fire & Emergency Services responded to assist with suppression efforts.

After just over 40 minutes, firefighters brought the blaze under control. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The fire is believed to have been caused by the improper disposal of used fireworks. The incident remains under investigation.

“This is exactly why we stress fireworks safety every year,” said Fire Chief Jonathon Davis. “Even after the show is over, fireworks can stay hot enough to start a fire. Taking a few extra minutes to soak them before throwing them away can protect your home and your family.”

Walton County Fire Rescue reminds residents to soak used fireworks in water before disposing of them in a metal container away from homes, garages, and other combustible materials.
