JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 47-year-old man is behind bars in Jacksonville, facing several charges after police say he sexually battered and killed a woman earlier this year.
Raymond Jackson Jr. faces charges of first-degree murder, sexual battery and burglary with assault or battery.
On Jan. 23, JSO said patrol officers were asked to do a welfare check at an apartment on Sunbeam Road. When officers entered the apartment, they reportedly found a woman who had been attacked.

According to JSO, the woman died at the home.
After reviewing all available evidence, JSO said detectives identified Jackson as the suspect.
According to JSO, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office took Jackson into custody a few days following the incident, after he led officers and NCSO deputies on a chase. Records show that he was sentenced to three years in prison on May 13 for fleeing a law enforcement officer.
On May 21, while Jackson was serving his prison sentence, a grand jury indicted him on charges of first-degree murder, sexual battery and burglary with assault or battery, according to court records. Due to a court order, Jackson was transported from the Florida State Prison to the Duval County Jail on June 29, and arrested on those charges the next day.
“We’ll continue to seek justice for the woman’s friends and family,” JSO said in a release.
Court records show that Jackson is scheduled to be arraigned July 13, and that prosecutors have filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty.
