FORT PIERCE — The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has identified the diver who died after disappearing while attempting to recover a trolling motor that fell into the ocean June 27.
The victim was identified as Greer Boyd, 63, of Fort Pierce.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Boyd and several friends were fishing the morning of June 27 when the vessel’s trolling motor became detached and sank.
The group marked the location and later returned with diving gear to retrieve the motor.
Investigators said Boyd entered the water alone to search for the equipment. He resurfaced about 40 yards from the boat before disappearing again.
When the boat reached the location where Boyd was last seen, his companions found his buoyancy compensator and air tank floating in the water, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
At about 4:10 p.m., a civilian diver entered the water and found Boyd about 55 feet below the surface.
An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
