Man killed in Jacksonville Fourth of July shooting after fight escalates, JSO says

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said multiple individuals were detained at the scene, however, no arrests were made.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was killed in a Jacksonville Fourth of July shooting Saturday night after a fight escalated into gunfire, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

JSO Sgt. Johnny Cooke said officers responded to the 3600 block of New Berlin Road in reference to the shooting around 7:27 p.m..

While officers and paramedics were responding to the scene, Cooke said witnesses performed CPR on the victim. When paramedics arrived, the man was reportedly pronounced dead.

“What we know right now is that a group of individuals met in the area to celebrate 4th of July activities,” Cooke said. “At some point during the evening, a fight occurred which ultimately led to the shooting.”

JSO said multiple individuals were detained at the scene, and that detectives spoke to several witnesses.

As the investigation continues, JSO said this is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
