ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Law enforcement agencies across St. Lucie County spent the Independence Day weekend looking for impaired drivers, resulting in 13 DUI arrests as deputies and police officers worked to keep roads safe during the holiday.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office conducted a high-visibility traffic enforcement operation from July 3-5, assigning five deputies specifically to DUI and traffic enforcement throughout the county. By the end of the weekend, deputies had made seven DUI-related arrests and issued 332 traffic citations and warnings, including 35 citations and 297 warnings.

Meanwhile, the Port St. Lucie Police Department reported arresting six impaired drivers throughout the city over the Fourth of July weekend.

Combined, the two agencies reported 13 DUI arrests.

Sheriff Richard Del Toro said impaired driving remains a serious threat to public safety and praised deputies who worked throughout the holiday weekend.

Driving under the influence is a reckless choice that can destroy lives in an instant.”

“I am proud of the deputies who dedicated their holiday weekend to this enforcement operation and worked tirelessly to remove impaired drivers from our roadways,” Del Toro said.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department echoed a similar message, reminding residents that “freedom comes with responsibility” and noting that each DUI arrest represented an opportunity to prevent a potentially tragic crash.

Both agencies encouraged drivers to plan ahead if they intend to drink by using a rideshare service, arranging alternate transportation or designating a sober driver before heading out.
