TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A child was found dead on Sunday in Broward County in another hot car death.
This marks the fourth hot car victim in Florida in the last two weeks.
Officers said the two-year-old was in the care of a babysitter when they were called to the scene Sunday afternoon.
This death comes less than a week after a Plantation father reportedly forgot to take his child to daycare.
Police there said he went to work, not realizing the child was still in the car.
Both agencies are reminding parents to always check their backseat before leaving a vehicle.
Experts say these tragedies can happen to even the most loving and responsible caregivers, especially when stress, fatigue and distractions take over, or routines change.
“And the change in routine doesn’t necessarily have to be earth shattering,” Chloe Burke with Kids and Car Safety said. “It could be a phone call or a detour on the way to work that changes the consciousness of a person and makes their brain go on autopilot. And then from there, they might unknowingly know that their child is still in the vehicle.”
Kids and Car Safety, a nonprofit, lists Sunday’s death as the fourth hot car death involving a child in Florida this year and the tenth nationwide.
