How will the Nov. 3 election ballot be worded regarding a referendum for Key Biscayne voters to approve or deny certain stormwater and/or flood prevention projects?
That is what residents will learn at the 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 7 Special Council meeting at in Council Chambers.
The meeting will also be shown live on VKB-TV.
Back on March 24, the petitioners’ committee of the Key Biscayne Neighbors Association filed its affidavit commencing proceedings to propose an amendment to the Village Charter by petition. The petition was filed with the Village Clerk on May 21, and by June 4, the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections verified a sufficient amount of petition signatures.
The current wording being submitted for Council’s review Tuesday is:
Voter Approval Required for Certain Stormwater and/or Flood Prevention Projects Exceeding $50,000,000
It is proposed that the Village charter be amended to require a majority vote of the qualified electors to approve any stormwater and/or flood prevention project(s), whether separated into separate projects and/or phases, that are estimated to collectively cost over $50 million within a period of three fiscal years.
Shall the above described amendment be adopted?
When that item is placed with the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections for the Nov. 3 vote, the notice must appear twice in Islander News at least 30 days prior to the election.
The referendum for Village of Key Biscayne voters is the first since the $100 million General Obligation Bond passed in 2020 with a 56.54% approval.
Voters could decide the fate of major stormwater projects this November.
