The Second Harvest of the Big Bend is hosting a second emergency food distribution, “in response to the loss of SNAP benefits and the increased need within our community.”
The food distribution will be held at the Governor’s Square mall at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6.
Second Harvest of the Big Bend has remained on the front lines of keeping residents fed while federal food assistance spending shuts off during the government shutdown.
The region’s primary source for charitable food hosted their first emergency food distribution on Saturday, Nov. 1 along with United Way of the Big Bend, which organized the drive, and WTXL.
Over a thousand families received support with the help of nearly 100 volunteers bundled up with smiles as they loaded milk, cartons of eggs, beef and more into the trunks of those in line.
“If you or someone you know could use support during this time of uncertainty, we invite you to stop by,” the organization said in a Facebook post.
The Big Bend region is home to five of the top 10 counties in Florida with the highest rates of food insecurity. That includes the capital county.
