STUART — Martin County Fire Rescue has equipped all of its rescue trucks with sensory kits designed to make emergency medical transports more comfortable for patients with special needs.
The kits include items such as noise-reducing headphones, fidget toys, tactile sensory objects and other calming tools to help patients self-regulate during what can be a stressful and unfamiliar experience.
Emergency responders say the kits can help lessen sensory overload caused by flashing lights, sirens, confined spaces and other stimuli commonly encountered during ambulance transport.
By reducing anxiety and providing appropriate sensory support, the kits may improve communication and cooperation between patients and first responders while creating a safer, more positive transport experience.
Martin County Fire Rescue said the initiative reflects its ongoing commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care for every member of the community.
