TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Construction to upgrade power lines along Centerville Road is moving into its next stage Saturday, July 11, as the City of Tallahassee continues an electric infrastructure enhancement project aimed at strengthening the system’s resilience against severe weather and improving reliability.
The city said the second phase of construction is complete and the project will now enter its third phase, with work taking place between Trescott Drive and Woodgate Way. Because the area is heavily residential, construction during this phase will occur during daytime hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week.
The broader project includes replacing power lines and poles along Centerville Road from Hodges Drive to roughly Potts Road. The city said the scope includes re-conductoring “a 4/0 and 559 lineups of mixed construction to a double 559 Hendrix.” The 559 Hendrix is described as a stronger, tree-coded cable that allows for a narrower system profile, which the city said is ideal for the canopy road environment along Centerville Road.
The city said the project has been engineered so that no planned outages or tree removal are anticipated. Work may include both daytime and nighttime construction depending on the phase, and the city said efforts will be made to minimize impacts from construction noise and nighttime work zone lighting.
City Electric crews are performing the work, and Centerville Road is being closed in four phases, with only portions of the roadway closed at a time. Emergency vehicles will be allowed through the work zone, while regular traffic will be detoured around the closure area. Detours will be marked, and access to private property will be maintained.
During the third phase construction hours, the city said regular traffic will be detoured as follows:
– Northbound traffic on Centerville Road will be detoured at Betton Road. Local traffic for neighborhood residents and area businesses can continue northbound along Centerville Road with caution up to the immediate work zone at Trescott Drive.
– Southbound traffic on Centerville Road will be detoured at Blair Stone Road. Local traffic for neighborhood residents and area businesses can continue southbound along Centerville Road with caution up to the immediate work zone at Woodgate Way.
Access within the work zone will be maintained by flag crews for emergency vehicles; residents on Tarpon Drive, Mullins Place, Hill Lake Drive, Highland Place, Hillsgate Court, Teddy Lane and Centerville Road; and local businesses, which the city said will remain open and accessible. Drivers are asked to go slowly and follow crew instructions.
Pending no unforeseen circumstances or severe weather delays, the city said the final phase of construction will run between Woodgate Way and roughly Potts Road near Capital Health Plan on Centerville Road from late September to early November. That phase is expected to take place during nighttime hours, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
