TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — New pictures from inside a construction-related fire which broke out at an eight-story building in downtown Tallahassee Thursday July 9, show the extent of the damage.
The fire prompted a large emergency response and an evacuation.
At about 3:47 p.m., the Tallahassee Fire Department was dispatched to what’s known as the R.A. Gray Building, a commercial structure at 500 S. Bronough St. Firefighters arrived to find an exterior fire associated with construction activities that had extended into the walls of the building. The fire had spread from the second floor toward the third floor on the south side of the structure.
Construction workers were safely outside when crews arrived, and firefighters assisted with evacuating the building. Crews deployed hose lines, breached walls and checked for fire extension, stopping the fire before it could spread beyond the wall space. Firefighters contained the fire to the second-floor wall cavity, preventing further vertical extension into the upper floors.
Primary and secondary searches confirmed no occupants remained inside the building. Firefighters completed overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished before clearing the scene.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Responding units included E101, E1, E3, T1, BC1, DFR1, FM1, T3, E4, BC3, C4, A4, C2 and P8. The fire department was assisted on scene by the Tallahassee Police Department, FDLE Capitol Police, Leon County EMS and City of Tallahassee Utilities.
