Employers of ariport and hotel food and beverage workers on Friday started firing immigrants with Temporary Protected Status after the deadline passed for them to stay in the United States with deportation protection and work authorization.

But during a Friday rally at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport coordinated by the the labor union UNITE HERE Local 355, word spread of an apparent extension of TPS status for Haitians to July 24, leaving workers in a state of uncertainty.

The union that represents some 170-plus workers at the airport pledged to intervene on behalf of the protected immigrants, but their course of action appeared uncertain.
