Lehigh Acres is experiencing significant growth, and with it comes the need for more public transportation options. At a recent WINK Listens event, residents shared their concerns about the lack of public transit in the area.
Â
Marie Bobb, a Cape Coral resident, expressed her frustration.
Â
“If I need to go down to Fort Myers to shop, there’s no public transportation there for me, I’ll have to take a cab to Fort Myers,” said Bobb.
Â
Bobb attended the event to voice her opinion that Lee Tran should increase bus service in Lehigh Acres.
Â
“I have a problem with public transportation. Okay, it doesn’t come up to where I live,” said Bobb. “If I don’t have my car and I need to go to the grocery store, I have to call a cab or call the grocery store and order the groceries to come to my house.”
Â
Currently, two bus routes serve Lehigh Acres: one to Edison Mall in Fort Myers and another within the community. However, bus stops remain distant for some residents.
Â
The county informed us of an alternative solution. By downloading the Lee Tran app, residents of Lehigh and Bonita Springs can book an on-demand minibus ride for $3.00, allowing travel anywhere within the area.
Â
For residents like Bobb, this service could significantly improve her quality of life.
Â
“Because of the influx of people coming into the neighborhood now that road Homestead, up to 82 or down to Lee Boulevard, is very busy, especially during school time when the parents have to come and pick up their kids,” said Bobb.
Â
Riders can also benefit from a discounted $1.50 fare for trips to and from the Lehigh Park & Ride, including to Fort Myers.
Â
Lee Tran plans to expand its ULTRA service zone in Lehigh Acres early next year, offering more transportation options to the growing community.
