CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)— After Friday’s severe weather brought damaging winds to Cape Coral, some clarification is needed regarding a possible landspout.
A member of the public reported a landspout to the National Weather Service, which created a storm report based on what was reported. A landspout is a type of tornado that develops near the ground and stretches upward, rather than developing near the base of a cloud and touching down like a typical tornado.
According to the NWS, there is no photo or video evidence to confirm the landspout, so it remains unconfirmed. However, unconfirmed does not mean it did not happen, and damage is damage regardless of whether the event is officially confirmed. Southwest Florida has experienced a few landspouts this year. Landspouts can still cause damage despite their different formation process compared to typical tornadoes.
As of 10:30 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service has not confirmed a landspout, funnel cloud or tornado in Cape Coral.
