Most of us don’t spend much time thinking about infrastructure until we’re sitting in traffic or driving through a construction zone. What many residents don’t see is that by the time construction begins, a project has often been years in the making.
Every major infrastructure project begins with identifying a need. From there, our engineering teams conduct traffic studies, develop designs, coordinate with utility providers, acquire necessary right-of-way, secure permits, and identify funding sources—often including state and federal grants. By the time construction begins, years of planning have already taken place.
That careful planning has allowed Port St. Lucie to complete several significant transportation improvements over the past four years. Projects such as Floresta Drive Phases 1 and 2, the Torino roundabouts, and the widening of Port St. Lucie Boulevard between Gatlin Boulevard and Alcantarra Boulevard have improved traffic flow while adding sidewalks, multi-use paths, drainage improvements, landscaping, and enhanced safety features. During that same period, we’ve resurfaced more than 221 miles of roadway and constructed approximately 14 miles of new sidewalks to better connect neighborhoods throughout our city.
Infrastructure extends beyond roads. It also includes investing in the places where families gather and our community comes together. Recent additions such as Riverland Paseo Park, Pioneer Park and The Preserve trails at The Port, and Stars and Stripes Park have expanded recreational opportunities while enhancing the quality of life residents value.
The work doesn’t stop there. The City also recently completed the St. Lucie West Boulevard Feasibility Study, which identified a design-build solution that is expected to come before City Council in the near future, with construction anticipated to begin in late 2027.
Improvements to the Savona Boulevard and Gatlin Boulevard intersection are also expected to come before Council, with construction anticipated to begin in early 2027. Additionally, construction will soon begin to add and extend turn lanes while making pedestrian safety improvements at the Tradition and Village Parkway intersection. These projects are part of our long-term commitment to improving traffic flow, enhancing safety, and ensuring our infrastructure keeps pace with our community’s needs.
Every project we complete, and every project we plan for, is intended to make it easier and safer for residents to get where they need to go. While infrastructure projects take time, careful planning helps ensure we’re making smart investments that will benefit our community for years to come.
