HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WLOX) — A former Ocean Springs standout and Southern Miss pitcher heard his name called during the 2026 MLB Draft.

Southern Miss right-handed pitcher McCarty English was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 17th round with the 503rd pick.
During the 2026 season with the Golden Eagles, English appeared in 12 games with seven starts, starting the year in the team’s weekend rotation before transitioning into the bullpen halfway through the season. He collected a 1-1 record with a 4.78 ERA, striking out 22 batters in 26.1 innings.
During his senior season at Ocean Springs, he posted a 2-4 record with a 2.42 ERA, striking out 87 batters in 52 innings. Following the season, he was named to the Crossroads Diamond Club Class 5/6A All-Star game.
